What is involved in providing medical disability exams for Veterans?
VES providers complete medical disability exams on behalf of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Also referred to as a Compensation & Pension (C&P) Exam or Claim Exam, these examinations enable the VA to determine if a Veteran’s claimed disability is related to their service, or to determine the severity of their disability. Exams are conducted from the Provider’s clinic or from a VES location and typically last 15 minutes to one hour. Upon completion of the examination, providers fill out Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) for submission to the VA using VES’s automated system. For more information about C&P Exams, view the VA’s C&P Exam explainer video and BDQ information and forms.

What are the requirements for becoming part of the VES provider network?
All clinicians providing medical disability examinations through VES must have an active license in their area of medical specialty and meet additional requirements specific to their specialty. Requirement details can be found on the VES Providers webpage.

How do I apply and get started?
We are so glad you are interested in joining the VES network of qualified clinicians. To get started, simply fill out the interest form on our Providers webpage and we will connect you with a recruiter to start the process.

Application, Onboarding, and Training

What is involved in the provider application process?
The full process includes an online application, credentials verification, a background check, and customized training.

How long does the application and onboarding process take?
While the duration varies, most clinicians complete the process within 10-45 days from application submission to training completion. A variety of factors including the clinician’s specialty and availability will impact the duration. Your recruiter can address specific questions about the timeline based on your specialty and circumstances.

What is involved in the training process?
Training begins once the online application and credentialing are complete. Training for medical disability examiners includes two phases: VA online courses, and VES functional training.

First, you will complete online training modules provided by the VA, including:

  • Medical disability exam training, customized by specialty
  • Completed online and on your own schedule
  • The number of modules and duration vary based on specialty and your schedule

Next, you will participate in functional training conducted by VES, including:

  • 1-2-hour online session with a VES trainer provides instruction on our streamlined processes for submitting VA forms and automated systems for scheduling, billing, and payments
  • A 60-90-minute practice medical disability exam conducted with your VES Provider Liaison who will guide you through the process

Once you have completed the VA training modules and VES training session(s), you will be ready to conduct veteran exams.

Will I be paid for the training process?
Yes. VES provides compensation for both the VA online training modules and the VES functional training.

Billing & Payments

How much will I earn for each medical disability exam that I conduct?
VES provides competitive rates to compensate clinicians for providing exams and completing Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs). Rates for each exam and Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) vary based on factors including geography and specialty. Your recruiter will provide up-to-date rates.

When will I be paid for the medical disability exams that I conduct?
All clinicians in the VES provider network are classified as independent contractors and are paid based on the rate structures communicated by their recruiter. Payments are typically disbursed on the first and 15th of each month once the exam is completed and/or report approved.

How are payments disbursed?
VES pays Providers via convenient direct deposit. For clinicians who prefer paper check payments, VES also provides this option.
